Ahh but what is a painfull death? It is dull and unworthy of remembering...but this I bet you would remeber, the way Asuka died. Pain is what makes you feel alive and wouldn't you want to experience your final moments to the fullest? I know I would!

Why does everyone always blame Shinji? His EVA was locked in place by bakelite and he couldn't move it. Only after EVA-02 died did EVA-01 wake up, break free and let him into the plug. There was nothing he could do for Asuka.
