Tornado Intercept May 23 2008

Video Description:
In our continuing effort to gather magnetic field readings from underneath mesocyclones, data gathered is used to complement previous storm datum from which we published "Electromagnetic Fields Recorded in Mesocyclones" in the National Weather Digest Vol. 32 -- Number 1 July 2008.
Another springtime storm season is well underway on the High Plains by May 23rd. Just the day before, a 1-mile wide tornado ripped through Windsor Colorado less than 15 miles from my home base in western Fort Collins. Conditions appeared to be ripe for more tornados the next day; this video is o
ur chase from that day. The Universe smiled... Our team spotted three tornados on this day. Our first storm ended up being a hail event. We then ran north on I-25 north of Cheyenne Wyoming to let the next potential storm come to us. Once the TVS (tornado vortex signature) appeared on the radar,
some 40-miles south-we had turned back around heading south on I-25 to close the gap between us and the storm, which was, headed NNW at 38mph. I eventually spotted 3 or 4 tornadic vortices out of this single ribbon storm before it wound down. The second encounter was the best. The tornado passe
d less than 500 meters to our southwest. This proximity allowed Richard to get into the vortex via his dirt bike. This small F0 tornado just skipping along was the ideal storm for our research! This storm had to most unusual presentation I've ever seen. It looked like a small box, tipped on its s
ide, with the tornado vortex coming out of one of the tips as it just grazed the ground. We witnessed little or no damage from this event. The third tornado just dropped out of the cloud off in the distant NNW as we were shooting the 'wrap-up' of the days chase. Enjoy! --Scott Stevens
