If you listen to his earlier material you'll find a few examples of his singing. He had a really nice voice before it became so gruff. Check out "Wonderful WINO," America The Beautiful" and "Raisin Rhetoric."

If you listen to his work (especially earlier on) you can hear it's all done in an almost staccato rhythm with very precise intonation. His comedy in it's own way then was musical, that's one thing I love about Carlin is he doesn't have any pretensions, he knows what he does and you can tell he busts his ass learning the material. He doesn't just walk out and kind of wing it, he approaches his comedy almost as an art, something that's been looked over and perfected before being performed. :)
