Beckett's later ... ( 3 months ago by gdurasow)
Beckett's later work is a move towards a theatre without performers, necessitated by the potential for actors and stage crew to make mistakes. If you consider that then it could be argued that Beckett would love this because the camera does the job far more effectively than a lighting technician with a spotlight.

I love Samuel Beckett and his work.
Though this piece (i have found) is not as notable as all his other, it is my personal favourite.
I think Allan Rickman does a phenomenal job in this particular rendition of 'Play' also. I just hate having to watch it, alone at 1am for a drama assignment. They're just a little creepy.

hi im a year 12 student, and I've just been told we were studying samuel beckett's "waiting for godot" for the topic "after the bomb", i took a look at the play on youtube, read some readings as well as the play, and i absolutely loved it. However i'm absolutely perplexed with this play, can someone plz explain what this is about; is there an underpinning observation/critical remark about humanity or is it simply about adultery? plz comment back/reply here. Thankyou in advance!

I would look at the play as something of a metaphor for the idea that 'hell is other people.' The landscape is quite hellish, or at least a sort of purgatory.

Deirdre Bair's biography of Beckett has some useful insights if you're really interested in knowing more. Pinning Beckett down is a tough business. From a dramaturgical POV it's interesting to compare this work with Sartre's HUIS CLOS (NO EXIT),not only in terms of the nature of hell, but also in terms of what we know about ourselves and others. Yet,in many ways (if not more)
this play is as ... ( 3 weeks ago by dennis0805)
this play is as much about its own form as is it about its content and any connective tissue you might find in a comparison to HUIS CLOS. The form introduces two more unseen characters. I could rattle on, but it's important to distinguish between the play's dramatic text (which is probably about adultery)and its performance text (which is open field of understanding/meaning).
