But they only needed the 7th symbol, the point of origin, not the destination. Can't the gate detect whether it's being dialed from the planet of the correct point of origin? If they were on Abydos, and put in Earth's address but put any other origin symbol besides Abydos, the gate shouldn't activate, right?

I don't know, but they were in another galazy and if I remember correctly you need the 7th symbol in order for the gate to give you the correct destination and send you all hte way there not just partway.
