I wouldn't describe this as 'free' jazz as there is a theme for the improvisations to be based on, namely "I Can't Get Started". I can see how you might think it was 'free' though as Oscar treats it with an extremely RUBATO (which itself means 'play freely') approach, until the tempo section of course! "Free" jazz is TOTAL improvisation from 'nothing' but the player's imaginations and it's not a style I enjoy that much as it can lead to over indulgence. Oscar typifies impeccable tastefulness!

anyone else notice that the stereo/HD version the person below me posted (which works great!) is actually backwards stereo?
The higher notes on the piano appear on the left and the lower on the right... it really throws you off if you listen closely. My solution: turn the headphones around.

In a real life concert situation, sitting in the audience, the sound you would hear would be monophonic, anyway. Splitting the piano sound by recording with, say, two mikes across is artificial - but you
´re right, though about channels been reversed, IF you listen from the position where the piano player himself is sitting (splitting hairs here)

Before knowing Earl Hines, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson, I didn't know that the Kingdom of God is on earth, right here! They were among my best spiritual teachers, for their piano play is more than piano play, it's a lively expression of faith in our incredible and unlimited human potential. Look only at their faces when they play, so incredibly self-assured, without a doubt, inspired, radiant and full of ecstasy, which is rarely an expression and attitude to be found among classical pianists.

When you see his hands from above, you see that he is the unique exception from the norm in that his left hand is bigger and more voluminous than his right hand. I know only one man who was having that anomaly, it was Serge Rachmaninov. The left hand, as we know in psychiatry, expresses the power of the Inner Child. great playing from a master. feel bad for him playing under those hot stage lights. By three minutes in he was practically melting.
