I have heard a lot ... ( 1 week ago by PurpleKittenTasha)
I have heard a lot of versions of this song, most of which I really like but one thing bugs me about several versions including this one and that is the pronunciation of the word you instead of 'ya' so that it rhymes with hallelujah. Some do it right through which I prefer some do it on and off, like this one and some only do it in the first verse. GRRR

I agree. It should be pronounced "ya." Otherwise, it doesn't rhyme. There's also something really haunting about the casualness of the pronunciation "ya": It echoes the singer's attempt at trying to shrug off his feelings. Of course, the the melody and precision of the song take hold as he is trapped in his melancholy. Really beautiful.

Whereas this sounds great as a backdrop to certain films/t.v progs., it doesn't really make sense when reading the words to the song. The bible ref., David, Samson etc., mixed as one for example. If you want to read a great composition of words with feeling check out The Box by the late John Denver.

It is a matter of personal taste, perhaps. The Box by Denver for me personally is more of a fable, and I prefer lyrics to be less straight forward. I think, Hallelujah lyrics is the masterpiece, and it emotionally gets through to me, quite rare thing for the poetry these days

i don't the religious interpretation is the one that dominates...it is actually an exploration of love, and in more explicit renderings, of sexuality.

Yeah, I don't know why; I can't put my finger on what it is, but he really does creep me out. I'm not trying to be insulting, he really is talented, but...
I wonder why he "has been 'creepy' since he played with Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground."

A little bit...like if you watch a video where David Bowie sings "Wild is the Wind" (I think in black and white), you can sort of see it. Maybe its the nose and the way he moves his face around the microphone...
Hey Purple, I'm OK ... ( 3 days ago by dreadOFdread)
Hey Purple, I'm OK with the lack of rhyming 'Hallelujah' with 'Ya'. Actually, it never occurred to me until you mentioned this. Cale's is the version I heard first and know best so this influences how I think the song should be sung. I think that it is all in the artist's interpretation and not a right or wrong thing. Perhaps it is more of a North American thing - to say 'ya'? Anyway, I love Cale's version. Well, to be honest, I love Cale .... period.

I see where you coming from, KaraBear789..that's OK I think. How many times have you seen him? First time I saw him I had similar impression, but after 10-15 times this feeling disappeared. I guess it is the effect John Cale has on easily impressionable people, like us:)) After 'digging' in his music I've found him to be very inspiring musician. If you like his music this feeling will go away eventually
Hey dread, the ... ( 2 days ago by PurpleKittenTasha)
Hey dread, the rhyme with hallelujah, I think, is an important part of the song. If you focus on the lyrics there is a kind of weary and cynical outlook mixed in with the spirituality and beauty, that is reflectd in the casual 'ya'. I also feel that it affects the rhythm and meter, the poetical nature of the lyric. That is as important to me as the beauty of the melody.

I think there are more versions of this song than any other on youtube, which surely shows what a great & important song it is.. this perhaps the most stark & dramatic version & does the most justice to the original. Captivating.
The words refer ... ( 1 day ago by gilboagilboa)
The words refer simultaneously to both religious experience and erotic love - the two levels are completely intertwined. David was a great warrior king, a man who was driven by erotic love to do terrible things - but who was also the quintessential religious poet, the author of Psalms (Read Samuel I&II). Cohen tries to show how these are all paradoxically interconnected - erotic passion gives rise to "hallelujah" ("Praise the Lord!), the word most closely identified with Psalms.

i didnt like it at first, but to be completely honest, it's a good cover, the emotion comes out pretty well a minute in the song, a couple bits annoy me, but the tempo is at the same speed as rufus wainwright which i think is probably one of the best covers of this song so, 4/5
