In the spring of 1968, Richard Proenneke, 51 set off into the Alaskan wilderness to enjoy his retirement living in a backcountry cabin he crafted by hand. Over the next 35 years he lived here in solitude.

´m sorry, that was my first "question". but after some research i do know that all depends on what we eat.also if we feel alone and depressed depends on our food.he did have a lot of protein and protein is known for reducing depressions.

That he did this at 51 is amazing. Really cements some idea of the longevity of human life to me, and I'm only 18 and I haven't a clue what to do. He did something, though. He has my respect, and certainly has inflamed some desire in me to do this some day.

I remember seeing this when I was only 12, now at 43, it is STILL a great film. What skill this man had. Proof that ONE MAN CAN do something truely great.

notquitealex- if i can say so- i see that you understand what Dick did - i think you are on your way- i didnt find my true path till i was 38...if i could write myself a letter to me at 18 id write to just listen to my inner guidance and compass and NEVER second guess it...you will find your path if you listen to it.. never follow- Always lead! - the call will come when you are most ready to listen..

There is another guy who is similar and a legend. his story is actually little known but just as inspiring!...his name Was Albert Faille- there is an NFB documentary on him. he lived on the Nahanni river in fort Simpson in the northwest teritories..

- when he was in his late 70's he travelled every year up the Nahanni river to look for a kind of shangri-la that was said to exist...he would haul his own lumber up a steep grade and would build a second riverboat every year at the riverbank because he could not portage the first boat past the class 5 rapids. one year he got caught in an early winter- had to pulled his own tooth- and got scurvy - thers a lot more too it than that but a legend of a man

hi ihateyotube11- thanks for asking- the only material i could find- and believe me i looked- was his documentary in 1968...but if you go to th NFB website (nfb is National filmboard of Canada)you can get a copy of it- ALbert Faille, and his cabin are memorialized in fort simpson...there are pics of him i think and a plaque at his cabin...he was amazing considering what he accomplished in his 70;s and i think he did it into his 80's ill try to find some things for you and send them your way..

Good luck. I'm going to be living out of a backpack, hitching through Canada next year. I was thinking of visiting Twin Lakes for a week or two.
