We had an LP in the 60's that was worn out by the amount of times it was played at home.He was one of my father's favorite singers.
Amongst the songs that I heard Paul singing was the spiritual, Deep river. I have never heard anyone singing that who could better it. If anyone could post a recording of Paul Robeson singing Deep river on this site, I would be truely grateful to them. Tom.

Fascinating and ... ( 11 months ago by gmmix)
Fascinating and beautiful rendition of what was originally described as "a plantation song" by the Victor Company many years ago. I spent a Sunday afternoon with Robeson in his latter years at the home of a relative in the 800 block of N. 6th St., Reading, PA. He was very contemplative in his comments. My big regret was that at that time he had no interest whatever in his recordings or music generally. He was totally focused on politics and world conditions.

If you recognize the unfortunate fact that the legacy of talented Black Communist artist / thinkers has been all but erased by the [White] Red-Scare, do something to educate those Black kids!

A beautiful tender song sung by a truely great and talented singer. Too bad it was for the entertainment of blood soaked Stalinists who were literally raping half of Europe at that very moment in 1949 with their sights on Asia next.

Seconded, mosheh72. He isn't just an inspiration to black people; he's one of the single most brilliant and talented people to ever live. I went over 20 years without ever having heard of him, but I learned about him in a film class and now he's one of my biggest heroes... and I'm a pasty white Ashkenazi Jew. Everyone in the world should know and appreciate Paul Robeson. He was the 20th Century's Jefferson/Goethe.
