I'm not sure, but I think he may have actually said "faggot" but it's been edited since. Back in the 80's, P.C. was not as bad as now, so he could probably get away with saying it in concert (though still incur the wrath of gays).

The funny thing is, I think Knopfler did not mean "faggot" in the gay sense, when he wrote the song. It was at one time a more general term, somewhat like a "dandy", or an obsequious somewhat effeminate guy. Especially its use in the U.K. which is where he's from. If you've seen some of the 80's "New Wave" videos, which is partly what Knopfler's addressing in this song, take notice of some of the male performers..
