This is taken from the docu 'Bombay and Jazz', screened in 1992 as part of the BBC's 'Rhythms Of The World' series. Don't know where the poster got 'circa 1978' from! The footage was shot for the film so can't be much older. It's a great loss this band did not tour or record much outside of this event (as far as i know). I agree Shankar is at his best here, with Don Cherry in his element-combined with Trilok's unique power grooves the whole effect is mesmerizing.

I'm not sure if the film is available anywhere,(but it should be!) it won many awards (including a nomination at Cannes). There is also great intimate footage of the band in rehearsal and comments from them. See 'Alice Coltrane in Bombay' for another clip, with Shankar again and Zakir Hussein in a beautiful setting. Alice' words on John Coltrane are very moving.

Luckily I was lent a VHS copy from the director H.O. Nazereth (an uncle of mine!) Not sure if he can do anything about releasing it on DVD though - think that's up to the Beeb! I'll have a word anyway....

Actually since another user comment says this was filmed in 1992 not 78, it probably IS Eagle-Eye Cherry. Mystery solved....

Totally cool that Shankar and Don Cherry jammed together. Is this on CD somewhere? Also, who's the guy on the drum kit? Totally swings! The girl in the big hat didn't seem to know what to do. Plays a mean tamboura/ine though.

The guy on percussion is Trilok Gurtu who I have just seen in Perth, Scotland, playing with some folk musicians. He has taken on Don Cherry's mantle, a nomad, jazz gypsy and mentor for so many young musicians. The concert was fantastic! Don is one of my all time heros.

Thank you kindly for the info. Will have to keep an eye and ear out for Mr Gurtu. Don Cherry was a true genius. Definitely in the spirit of Coltrane. Beautiful music and beautiful spirit! God rest his soul.

That's not Eagle Eye on the mic...it's Shankar (notice the violin and the voice). Also, this is NOT circa 1978, maybe 1987, but definitely a lot later than 1978.

Nice video...thanks for posting this...but I'd say the "origins of world music" goes back to the New Music Workshop at UCLA in the early-mid 60's with people like Don Ellis, Harihar Rao, Gayathri Rajapur, Joseph Byrd and a number of others. Don Ellis had the "Hindustani Jazz Sextet" in 1964, and Rao had done a sitar-led album of rock songs in 1967.

Oh Man, that's the best taste of Don Cherry I had since since '78 when he was touring with Colin Walcott & Nana, with various folks sittin' in like Steve Gorn, Badal Roy, Don's wife Moki and even a Sandy Bull hanging off the front of the stage, un-mic'ed playing his Oud in NYC. This Mumbai film has to to be made available!!! I need to see this *whole performance8. I need it like a junkie needs his fix. I'm serious! Masters like this don't just come along every decade, or life time. Thanks!!
