I agree that folk ... ( 1 month ago by jtyoss)
I agree that folk music exists to be expanded upon; and if this was the only instance where Zeppelin had done something like this it wouldn't be as frustraing.
But take the example of Bob Dylan's early sound being (massively) influenced by the Folk music of Woody Guthrie, Dylan always credited Guthrie and even wrote a song for/about the influence Guthrie had on him called 'song for woody'.
I have absolutely ... ( 1 month ago by jtyoss)
I have absolutely no idea what you're trying to say. I guess your like 14 or something. One day, when you are older, maybe you'll be opened minded enough to realise that there's more to music than classic rock radio and also (if you're lucky) you'll discover that just becuase something is popular or has sold millions of copies doesn't make it good. Look at the current singles in the pop charts if you need proof.
Not to defend Page ... ( 1 month ago by nonthere)
Not to defend Page for what he did to more than one guy but to just say that he was just a rip-off artist is unfair and no taking into account his own originality (did he rob The Song Remains the Same or Ten Years Gone? Those are great songs). Put another way I guarantee lots of people wouldn't have Jack Orion if it weren't for Zep, so Bert's sales did improve. But I agree that it was low class. And Johnny Winter was right about Zep's early blues. Jansch and Page are both unique and rate praise.
A fair comment. ... ( 1 month ago by Johnny6666)
A fair comment. Page, magpie though he may be, was still incredibly gifted and rightfully earned his reputation. I imagine there are many who come to Jansch through Page. Of course, Page should still make amends - that would simply be the right thing to do.
Agreed. But he ... ( 1 month ago by nonthere)
Agreed. But he won't at this point, I think. Well, I'll make it up to Bert myself, since my vinyl Jack Orion is done, and get some CDs.
Why does everybody ... ( 1 month ago by Marty1fatbstard)
Why does everybody always have to bicker about versions, samples, stolen rifts etc. Every single artist is inspired by someone. Artists openly admit that. I am always interested in connections and origins. Led Zep are my personal favourites I love learning and following leads hence how I'm Here. So many comments remind me of school girl mentality where girls would fight because david cassidy was more lovely than donny osmond. NOW FUCKING GROW UP and AGREE WITH ME or I'LL DO YA !!!
Credit given where ... ( 1 month ago by Johnny6666)
Credit given where credit due - and if you knew anything about the music that 'inspired' Zeppelin, you'd know how significantly they 'borrowed' from those sources (with little recompense). Jansch was a VERY deep well from which Zeppelin thirstily drank. Go back to your Nickleback albums, blowhard.

Marty1fatbstard: If ... ( 1 month ago by musik102)
Marty1fatbstard: If someone stole something from you, would you be happy with that situation? If Jimmy had credited Bert with arrangement of Black Waterside, then Bert's financial situation would have been greatly improved ( Bert is not a wealthy - or anywhere near it). Jimmy disrespected Bert by not crediting him with his beautiful arrangement.

now listen here,i know for a fact that jansch took from dave graham, who before him took from others.they performed their own interperation of each others pieces,as is the custom in folk and traditional.this music is designed to give a voice to other musicians through the medium of a different arrangements,it is the custom to take anothers song in folk and change it and subsequently call it your own.THEY ALL do it.come on,its done in everything.and its a damn good thing!chill!

also!this song is based heavily on she moved thro the fair,an irish folk tune.you can hear the likes of rory gallagher play it on the guitar and hear the similarity immediatley, but even just listen to any irish trad arrangment and you'll hear it,in fact, most of you will say he stole it judging by your arguments.OMG!IS BERT BEING A FOLK MUSICIAN??THAT BASTARD;) well,at least he credited it...right?oh no...wait a second...hmmm.....lets all bask in how much of a thief Page is anyway!Relax!
spankerius: So ... ( 4 weeks ago by musik102)
spankerius: So you're an expert on folk music? So Black Waterside is based on She Moved Through the Fair? Where is your evidence for such a claim?

Don't forget to check out the Youtube clip of Dave Evans playing his tune "Stagefright". A terrific Jansch influenced playing/composition. Now if Jimmy could have produced something on acoustic guitar like that...

Don't forget to check out the Youtube clip of Dave Evans playing his tune "Stagefright". A terrific Jansch influenced playing/composition. Now if Jimmy could have produced something on acoustic guitar like that... Now that was just plain unnecessary. I listened to that stagefright song, it was very good, style wise. Fingerpickin' wise, it was very complex in structure and texture, but compostition wise, I wouldnt say it was as good as Bron yr aur by page.

Such an amazing track and an amazing player. In my book, easily the best player/writer of the whole D. Graham, J. Renbourn circle - not to say at all that those guys aren't brilliant in their own right - I just prefer Bert. And to those of you busting J. Page's balls, relax. Others have pointed out that the British folk/rock scene has always liberally borrowed from each other and is in NO WAY unique to Page or Zeppelin. Blackwaterside itself is a traditional tune, not an original by Jansch.
