Hacks cause more damage to the economy of MapleStory (the game they're playing). I've purchased mesos (MapleStory gold) from these websites before and it's never affected the economy. Plus, MapleStory has a free market where the price of items go up and down and Summer vacation from school has caused more economic damage than this. When kids were home for the summer, items were 4x as expensive. Now that the summer's over, prices have started to deflate.

China's citizens are enjoying the best improvements in health and food recourses available compared to most other "third world" countries. So I think it's premature to say that they're "dying of hunger".
Also, other work is easy to find in China. You can see from this video that most workers are teenage/adult men who do this because they enjoy gaming for free, with food supplied and a place to sleep.
So yes, I do think they are enjoying doing this.
