There is a copper coil on one end of the arm. Find where the two ends of the coil wire are connected to the flexable plastic cable that connects the arm th circuitry of the hard drive and attach the speaker wire there. Good Luck!

The HD did not cost me anything, I found it in a box of used computer parts that someone was giving away. It didnt work when I got it so it wasnt even a waste of a decent HD.

yea, this works, but its also easy to use the pins on the bottom of the drive, if you take off the logic board (its not needed) you will see a grid of pins. its normally the 2 on either the bottom or top of the row, plus you can connect them on the bottom this way to their out of sight!
I used 1 of the ... ( 11 months ago by tghbenz99)
I used 1 of the pins on the bottom and 1 on top becuase the two wires kept shorting together when I had the both on the bottom. It blew 2 fuses in my stereo by doing that.
I accidently removed your other comment about using the motor to make it spin. The only way I have found to do that is by pluging it up to a computer power supply. The motor is a stepper motor which must be controlled by the circuitry in the drive. Applying power to two leads of the motor will not
work.

Why? Because it's an interesting project. C'mon, you'd probably want to try it, too. Besides, it's a novelty. How many people do you see using hard-drives as speakers?

Cool. I've tried this with only partical success using my computer's HD. Is the re-installing of the so used HD back in my computer without the cover possible (because i misplaced it) or do i need to place the cover back on top for proper operation?
The hard drive will ... ( 10 months ago by tghbenz99)
The hard drive will run for about an hour with no cover but then it will die because the dust gets on the platters in the drive and ruin them. I doubt that the drive will work anyway after using it as a speaker.
