Actually, I heard this was a song about cocaine addiction, and the "monkey" is the subject's constant craving for the cocaine. To shock the monkey could either mean that he's refusing to feed it (hence, not taking the cocaine), or he's pleasing it by doing it. In the music video, he's also seen with tinfoil packets and smoky rooms, could be symbolism for that, but that's just my theory.

Exactly. when i heard him say it was about jealousy, I thought "WTF?". But listen to it in that context and you see it makes perfect sense. "throw your pearls before the swine...make the monkey blind" YES. When I have felt really jealous in my life it felt like such a primal, uncontrollable force I knew exactly what Peter was talking about. I interpret the video that way too. I think the ceremonial rites he's performing are to try to overcome his primal side which is engulfinh him.
